    WHEN did he build it?

A 2012 $1,200 AR is $300 tops on the used market today.

    Just sayin'

I'm going to agree with those that said to part it out. Only way I see him getting anywhere near what he has in it. 5k AR is gonna be a really limited market and those people usually want to build their own or have a roll mark from someone who does custom ar's on it.

I don't disagree with any of the serious answers (I even like the joke ones - but please don't let that take the thread astray) He is going to give me a list of exactly what makes up this 5K Ar and I can then advise him on what direction to take. I agree he will NOT get his money back but he may be able to lessen the loss by parting it out. I suspect that he does have a high value optic on it, he typically didn't go cheap on the optics from what I've seen on some of his other guns

5k? My most expensive was in the low to mid 3s and there isn’t much I could up spend on. Maybe barrel to a proof or something but I just can’t see pushing 5 unless it’s got some uber high end optics

I never thought a modern AR would be "old" but I learned I'm wrong. Still rocking 4 rails on your handguard? You've got a retro build. I love that I embraced MEGA Arms so completely because I have a lot of retro guns that I can't even change the handguard on since they're monolithic. Thank goodness for retro Magpul rail ladders.

The point of that? Having an expensive AR with older components can hurt even more.

Does it have a full auto sear? that might make the price go up, But I don't think I have more than $500 in any of mine, and they all work fine.
And, yes, I am a cheap bastard. Can't understand what would make a $300 (Govmt cost) battle rifle worth $5k - kinda like gold plating a High-Point.
I'm curious. Would like to see see what he has in it.

Kinda why I didn't buy a Tavor or FN P-90 - I could easily make 3 good AR's for the same price.

You can build a complete AR-15 for only $500 or you can build a precision AR-15 and easily spend $500 on just the barrel.
They will both shoot and put holes in the paper.
