Yes, this is the case.

I was there for the Philadelphia Marathon 'trade-show' and there was nothing. But I've heard the tattoo convention has metal detectors.

For the auto show I seem to recall PAFOA'ers saying there wasn't anything.

Last tattoo show I went to didn't have any. That would have made for long lines. Most attendees had a bunch of metal things through holes in their hides.

Thanks abner/jthrelf, that brought up some funny thoughts of all those folks working their way thru a metal detector and how that would definitely be a major screw up, but not beyond the thinking of some security Nazis.

I sometimes set the one off at the courthouse with all the junk I have under my hide , but it's definitely not decorative or elective.

I'll be at the auto show like every other year, and we'll both be carrying just like every other year.
I never go into Philly unarmed.
