No. A "Record of Sale" form the size of a postcard was completed by the FFL at the time of sale of a handgun, but there was no background check in the early 1970s.

I remember walking around nose high to the tables in the '60's, not having a clue what I was looking at and my father used to just buy them. The nice men used to wrap them up in newspaper for him.
