Re: Were Background checks required to sell or Buy Pistols in the Early 1970's?
Not sure of the checks or paper trail. I do remember 3 day waiting period in the mid 70s.

...and waiver of the 3-day wait if you held a LTCF (pistol permit back then).
There are two kinds of guns. Those I have acquired, and those I hope to.

Re: Were Background checks required to sell or Buy Pistols in the Early 1970's?
My understanding is that a copy of what we now call the similar ‘Application/Record of Sale’ form was sent to the local chief of police. The law did not necessarily require the chief to do anything with it. Though, I understand the Philadelphia Police Department at some point in time even before the Brady law, and the 1995 UFA amendments would review during that 48 hour period and recommend to dealers in Philadelphia to stop a sale in certain cases. They and some other agencies may of been doing this for decades prior to the Brady law and PICS.

I investigated pistol permit applicants in our township for five years, 1970 thru 1975. I can guarantee, had there been screenings of purchasers, I would have been handed the job. Never happened here.

Might have been in the '60's? I remember my dad buying a pistol at the local drug store with no.paperwork or background check that I recall.

Just in PA, I think there is still a pharmacy, in York, that sells guns. There are probably more elsewhere.

That's what I was thinking, Smithgall’s Pharmacy. Sorry that I got the city confused.
