I'd say it's more of a medium contour barrel. I wouldn't consider it a heavy or varmint barrel.

The stock is like all the other American line stocks. It's okay, but feels kinda cheap to me. Not as much as the Savage Axis does, but you can definitely tell it's a budget rifle stock. If you're used to wood, it might be worth upgrading with a Boyd's or something. I bought this more for the daughter to hunt with eventually, so I'm gonna keep it. It's pretty light weight.

Yes, and the stock version takes mini-30 mags BUT since it is the same gun as the .223 (which takes ar-15 mags) you can order the mag adapter from ruger ($30 or so) and then use your x39 AR mags in it.

    Interesting.
It's unlikely that I'll buy a bolt gun, but I'll keep that in mind since I do have x39 AR mags now.

I have the ruger american in 7.62x39. I really like the gun. Normal groups at 100 yards seem to be 1-1.5" with cheap ammo. I haven't tried anything more expensive because cheap ammo is the reason I got it.

I have CZ 527s in 7.56X39 and 5.56X45. Got the rail adapter for each so that I can mount various sights. Love them.

I have thrown around the idea of making a lefty 700 converted to 7.62x39 but in the end of the day, not worth it.

I have an earlier import Zastava BA with a Trijicon on top. It's a tack driver.
