45/70 lever or 30-06 bolt for fun?
Thinking of getting a big full-power manual-action rifle and trying to decide between either a 45/70 lever action, or a 30-06 bolt.
If the bolt-action then I will make a project rifle out of it in the future, give it a nice mannlicher stock, rust bluing, make it classy. Not sure what I would do with the lever gun, but still want it to be something unique.
Either way both guns will just be iron-sighted range plinkers. Don't care for scopes on these. Been wanting to try deer hunting so maybe they'll see a hunt or two.
Basically they just need to look pretty, make a big boom, and be fun to shoot. The 30-06 has the accuracy and range advantage, so I could do some real target shooting. Though at iron-sight ranges, I think it's kind of a moot point. I'm not looking for a benchrest rifle. The 45/70 would be easier to reload for, and just generally more "cool".
Really up in the air about it.
What say you guys?AK-47s for EVERYONE!!!

45/70 for the win. Low recoil cowboy action ammo is way to much fun.

45/70 Marlin 1895 or Winchester 1886. Bolt guns are boring. Could get a 1895 Winchester in 30.06 if you like the caliber

Although its been said you never go wrong with a 30-06 the 45/70 would be my choice.
If for no other reason than history, nostalgia, and bone crushing power if wanted.
As Ducati recommended low "trapdoor" loads are fun, and nothing to sneeze at. Ask the buffalo's.
For my eyes a decent peep sight is the ticket on the 45/70. To do justice for the 06 I'd need a scope. It ain't what they call you, it's what you answer to.

I would recommend the lever 45/70 but they are hard to come by these days. If you can find one buy it. I only shoot full bore Win X or Xcaliber 300gr semi jacketed hp loads out of this one. The recoil isn't for lightweights. I have a velcro strap nylon cheek piece for it not shown. I plan on taking the scope off and installing the Skinner winged rear peep sight i bought for it. It's on the the list of things I need to do.

A .30-06 would be cheaper to shoot. But mag dumping black powder .45-70 out of a Marlin sounds like stupid fun.

If you want something that's accurate and pretty, get a Sharps in 45/70 with a vernier tang sight. My dad and I used to shoot black powder silhouette out to 600 yards with a Sharps and a Remington Rolling Block.

Hey Jen great choice - that's my hunting rifle!
Oh, and for plinking loads, I haven't found a better one than this (which you can shoot all day long with no recoil issues):
