Default Stupid mistake to avoid while reloading

I just started loading .223 this week and I made a stupid mistake that could have been really dangerous. I'm loading H4895 powder. I looked it up in my manual and 4895 shows 23.3-26gr of powder for 55gr bullets. I loaded 6 rounds batches at charges increasing from 23-25gr. I found one that grouped really well at 24.6gr.

Here comes the stupid part, I'm using H4895. The load data I used is for IMR4895. They are NOT the same. Luckily the charge for H4895 is 25-26gr so everything I loaded is below the recommended powder charge. Just thought I would post this as a lesson learned. Be careful.

Don’t forget about accurate 4895 too. Three powders with similar names.

The differences in burn rate between similarily numbered IMR and H- Hodgdon powders , and cautions for , are as old as the powders themselves.

I've wondered if they are still as pertinent today as Hodgdon in the distributor of both.

You could always contact Hodgdon and ask. But it would be unlikely that they would admit even if the IMR and Hodgdon powders with similar names are identical formulations. For one thing, there’s still brand differentiation which must still account for some revenue benefit, or they’d consolidate them. Also, lawyers. You’re probably aware that H4895 is specifically tested and designated as safe for reduced loads (see the website), but they warn that doesn’t apply to IMR4895.

I'm still testing to see what works the best with my rifle. I just loaded some between 25 and 26 gr. If none of those group better I'm sticking with the 24.6 gr load.

As I'm just getting into reloading I'm open to hear any and all other stupid mistakes to avoid. Carry on.
