Hey my bad, for some reason when i posted that i was thinking it was running around 1800fps or less out of a short barrel. Not sure where my head was at.

No problem! Yeah figure 2500-2600fps depending on the load and exact barrel length (the 11.5" does have its advantages in this department). Velocity and energy drop quick at distance, but still not any more than a pistol round.

You guys have me pondering whether the handiness of a 12.5 would outweigh the muzzle velocity loss/extra blast as compared to a 14.5.

Everyone says that 10.5" and up is "best" in terms of retaining velocity.
12.5" should be fine, making it a bit more handy, while keeping the velocity for longer ranges.

I wasn't concerned with velocity/effectiveness at longer ranges - my pistol's purpose is "handiness first" - for indoors if needed.
If I need to shoot something measured in yards vs feet, I'll grab a carbine.

Also, I expected the sound of a Howitzer and flames like a dragon, based on what the internet said about short barrels, but my 7" 7.72x39 doesn't belch flames, and it's not terribly "blasty" either. It's loud, but not terrible.

On my 5.56 7.5" AR, I added a PWS CQB muzzzle device specifically to eliminate fireballs, and it works as advertised.

    (both of these are 7.62x39 - 16" and 7")

    (both of these are 5.56 - 16" and 7.5")

14.5 is so similar to 16 (that you can have a true stock with) I'd say why bother. Go for a 11.5 or 12.5 for handiness.

    Speaking of "true stocks"...

SBA3 is the answer for pistols.
The Shockwave Blade "works", but the SBA3... yeah... whole other level.
