Default One week away from special election to determine 48th district PA state senator

Get out to vote!!!! Don't give them an inch!

LEBANON, Pa. (WHTM) — We are just one week away from a special election to determine who will be the next state senator in the 48th district.

Dave Arnold and Michael Schroeder will go head to head for the seat left open by former Senator Mike Folmer.

The special state senate election will be held next Tuesday after the seat was left open back in September.

Former State Senator Mike Folmer resigned September 18, after he was arrested on child pornography charges. Folmer was a four-term Republican senator.

Lieutenant Governor John Fetterman has said the people of the 48th district deserve representation as soon as possible.

The district includes all of Lebanon County and portions of Dauphin and York counties.

Democratic candidate Michael Schroeder is an associate professor at Lebanon Valley College, and republican candidate Dave Arnold has been Lebanon County’s district attorney for the past 13 years.

As for why this date was chosen for the election, Fetterman stated that the law requires voting machines to be locked for 20 days after the November 5 election so counties could not start preparing for this until early December.

The special election is scheduled to take place Tuesday, January 14, 2020. Candidates running for special elections in Pennsylvania are selected by their respective political parties.

Lebanon County District Attorney Dave Arnold will be the new state senator for Lebanon and parts of York and Dauphin counties, after beating Democrat Michael Schroeder in Tuesday's special election.

Arnold led Schroeder by over 8,000 votes with all precincts reporting Tuesday night.

Schroeder's campaign manager wrote in a Facebook post that Schroeder called Arnold earlier in the evening to concede.

The seat became open after former State Sen. Mike Folmer resigned in September after being arrested on child pornography charges. The 48th District encompasses all of Lebanon County and slivers of York and Dauphin counties.

Well that's a step in the right direction for the GOP.

Now they/we need to be prepared for the upcoming election----we need to hold the state house and Senate along with Trump and National elections. These people are nuts and we better not be in the same predicament as VA.

I don't really see that as a step in the right direction but rather a fortunate dodged bullet. When I saw that a Republican legislator got nabbed for child porn I expected another seat lost. Congrats on keeping it red.

My gut feeling says a few things are going on here:

#1---It's a very conservative district. If it was lost I'd be very concerned.
#2---If you look at the breakdown by county, he won by a lot. Which is promising because---
#3---Even though turnout was low I believe (hoping) "conservative Democrats" are fed up with their party and either not voting or fleeing to the (I) or (R) party.

One other note, the elections this past November in the state are more promising than disturbing. Even though 5 eastern counties flipped blue, 6 western counties neighboring Pittsburgh flipped red. Thank God for the central and western part of the state....We need to keep on top of this and get people out to vote.
