Default Road trip, PA to AZ

Hi All! Newbie here and glad to have found this site.

I am planning on taking a road trip with my wife and kids to Arizona.

My wife wont let me drive through states that wont let me carry my gun. After working with google maps for hours I found that for just 3 more hours of driving time, I will be driving strictly in states which honor the PA LTCF except for New Mexico. New Mexico, happens to be the only state that we will drive though which doesn't honor PA's LTCF.

Question to you guys is.....Since every state that we will be driving through honors PA's LTCF, can I have the gun on my hip beginning in PA, and drive all the way to a few miles short of New Mexico? When I get to the border of New Mexico ( which will be in Texas ) , I would like to lock up the gun according to federal regulations for interstate transport of firearms. Then, after driving into Arizona, I will get it out of the locked container and put it back on my hip.

So the questions to you guys are:

    a) Can I have the gun on my hip, beginning in PA, and drive all the way to a few miles short of New Mexico?
    b) Is there an official website that tells me how to transport firearms legally while driving through New Mexico, as per Federal law? I looked but couldn't find the atf website addressing this issue.

    Thanks for the replies.

Make sure you check in which States you must inform an officer you are carrying. Outside of those States, follow the normal advice of don't talk to the police.

I recently made a similar drive. I ended up just getting Utah and Arizona non resident permits. There are various places that do the classes and fingerprinting required. That would give you cover in Nevada.

Perhaps Nevada is a glove compartment state? Where you can have a loaded handgun in your car, but not on your person or outside of your car. I am unsure of this.

Nevada is an Open Carry state. No permit needed. I believe you can carry loaded/unloaded in your vehicle with no permit. But you definitely need to check Nevada gun laws before you make the trip. Also, Nevada is kind of a long way around to get to Arizona. I am assuming you meant New Mexico. New Mexico is also an Open carry state. And I believe you can carry loaded/unloaded in your car in NM also. But again I will emphasize, check the laws of that state first.

I would recommend that you get insurance from either USCCA or US Law Shield. They both can help answer your questions and will help you should you get jammed up.

If you have the time before your trip get a Utah or Arizona non-resident permit and then you’re good to carry in Nevada

Dear repliers, I made an error in my initial post. I meant I would be driving though New Mexico, - not- Nevada. Should I restart the thread all over again? Dont want to run afoul of the moderator.
