Ream chamber vs. replace AR barrel?
Anyone know an approximate cost to ream an AR chamber and check headspacing? $50? $100? $150? More?
Long story short, I have a barrel with an out of spec chamber, likely fixable via minor reaming but may or may not be worth the money. Manufacturer has already made good on the issue, so this is just an opportunity to potentially get a 'freebie' out of it, if financially justified. Same caliber, just reaming to correct size. First smith turned up mixed results and no $ estimate, so I'm mostly going off of Google right now. Might also have a chance for a family friend to ream, and would like to have a benchmark on what to offer him.

Re: Ream chamber vs. replace AR barrel?
Depends on the barrel. Standard hbar 16" style not worth the money. 24" stainless 5r rifled bull barrel sure.
Cost is going to be at least 50 and closer to 75 if i had to guess from a real gunsmith at a real business. A home or garage based may do it for less.www.Steelvalleycasting.com is your new home for coated bullets and custom ammo.

You might have a problem getting a gunsmith to touch it. What is wrong with the chamber? If it is just short chambered then it can easily be fixed (as long as your bore is not plated). Off centered or out of round forget it.

You/gunsmith will need a carbide reamer to cut it if it's chrome lined.

Its a 16" and is short by a hair, not chrome lined. Not sure of brand but from Combat Armory. They've replaced already and are good to deal with, was just hoping I could salvage this one on my own dime. Sounds like its not worth the aggravation though....and I need less aggravation in my life more than I need a 'free' barrel

Are you 100% sure it's out of spec? I have built A LOT of ARs, most in 5.56 and never had one out of spec.
