Probably would have been too lazy for that anyway. Truck driver fits my level of motivation just fine.

You are correct alcoholism is not a disease like say cancer or meningitis.

It is a mental disorder and I recall reading its about 50/50 genetics vs environment.

Lets take two people who are exactly 33% genetically predisposed to alcoholism.

Person #1 grows up in a stable home and is taught good values such as personal responsibility.

Person #2 grows up in an abusive home and left to their own devices.

Who would you bet becomes an alcoholic?

Considering he isn't the one who founded Amazon you are probably correct.

Has very little to do with how you are raised. heck if #1 had charmed perfect life but still suffered from say depression or maybe a poor self image he has just as much chance of being alcoholic. Take away the Alcoholic word it's addiction. Addiction comes in all forms. The only takeaway I see after hundreds of hours in groups, lectures and classes if almost everybody with a substance abuse disorder has some psychological issue, trauma and or family history. Some come from storybook like families and some not so much. Spans all socioeconomic landscapes.
Alcoholism is addiction just more socially acceptable.

I'm with you on that and have always had that opinion of truck drivers (not the new breed though). Most drivers are logical, level headed individuals with common sense and good IQ's. Truck driving has one of the best rates of return vs effort exerted. And generally speaking, truck drivers are a pretty interesting lot.

I had a very good friend who lost it all to alcohol. His mother was an alcoholic and he always told me that he feared that for himself as it is hereditary, in his opinion. In his case it turned out to be true.

That was all in his mind. My mother was a hard-core alcoholic. Went thru cases of beer and bottles of whiskey a week. Pancreatic cancer and cirrhosis of the liver killed her in her 40s. Same with her 2 sisters.

My older sister might have a glass of wine with a holiday dinner , and I'd bet my guns and motorcycles she's never been ''drunk''.

Some people , especially 'recovering' types label anyone whose ever had 1 drink an alcoholic with their ''Denial is the first sign of addiction!" and ''Once an alcoholic always an alcoholic'' tag lines.
