Any suggestions to bring the shine back a bit to them? I've been toying with the idea of semi-gloss polyurethane but something tells me I'd regret screwing around like that.

Every set of factory grips I've seen that someone hit with poly , oil , lacquer , varnish , etc , looked like SHIT!
The grips were finished before checkering. Any finish added to the checkering looks like SHIT!
And trying to re-cut the checkering afterwards always looks like SHIT!

    Those original grips have PATINA!

Oh , btw , from the fit at the top of the backstrap , those other NEW grips looked like they were for an N-frame.

The grips on the new 19's and the other revolvers in the classic line are made by Altamont. The grips in your OP almost look like they didn't complete the production process.

As far as refinishing the OE grips, there is a fellow on the S&W forum (the one with the hyphen) that specializes in restoring S&W stocks.
