Winchester's New 350 Legend

If you hunt in Pennsylvania get a tried and true 35 Remington and don't look back. It will leave this new whiz bang cartridge in the dirt. If anything the 35 Remington cartridge should be the Legend by now.

This looks like a niche market round with lots of hype. Good luck finding brass and bullets in 10 years.

Try 218Bee for tiny very expensive and only run once a year. Im pretty sure 22mag does the same thing but I can reload 218Bee.

For Classic woods rifles the 30-30 vs 35 Remington debate has been going on for well over 100 years. Both cartridges took countless deer over the century and still work today. At least until marketing and gunwriters convinced everyone they need something with a magnum in its name to take a whitetail.

I only mentioned the 35 Remington since it is the same caliber and the OP was intrigued by the 350 Legend's ballistics. The 35 Remington is faster and easier to load with heavier bullets.

.35 was encouraged by the gun experts who wrote for magazines and how-to books. They wrote that the .35 was a better bullet for plowing through brush and remaining on target than the .30-30.

I agree with you and continue to find myself pulling the old .35 lever out of the safe every year for rifle season. Only bring up the 350 Legend due to states that I also hunt with straight wall only limitations.

And the elephant in the room is the 350 is essentially built around the AR platform, so you can use your modern sporting rifle with no other changes other than an upper in the new caliber...

Seriously I'm a fan of the old .35 Remington myself but this new cartridge looks very promising. You can easily switch over your AR with just an upper: uses same mags, uses same bolt. Brass is simply a .223/5.56mm blown out into straight wall configuration. Plenty of horsepower for medium game like deer or pig without all the weirdness of the other big bore AR platform rounds.

If I hunted in a straight case only state I might have some serious interest in the 350 legend. Especially since I am an AR shooter and set for reloading and all that goes with it. A bit disappointed that they chose to use 9mm slugs instead of .357, but whatever. On the other hand the older I get the more I am gravitating to old school guns and cartridges. In compliance with these regs are the .32-40 Ballard/Winchester, .38-55, .375 win, .405win, .40-65, .45-70. Also the .351 and .401 self loading. I am seriously considering sending my Model 94 .30-30 to JES for a rebore to .38-55.

Some states have length requirements too so make sure you check before you go to a .38-55. I believe the .375 Win (which is superior to the 350 Legend) and the 444 marlin were over the length limit in one state but they were later grandfathered in so they are OK now. But this is by memory so you should check.
