Re: Advice on an EDC .44 magnum
The finish isn't wearing that nicely with use. I've found a spot or two of surface rust on it from just sitting on the bench. I keep it oiled up now, but as far as function it seems to work well. Overall I'm happy with it for the price. I paid under 400 for it on sale.

Re: Advice on an EDC .44 magnum
44 Mag. is way too much for SD. The bullets are made more for hunting than defense, and will likely sail right through the bad guy and hit an innocent bystander. Of course, the same could happen with a miss from a smaller cal., but a smaller cal. with less recoil will make a hit more probable. I have shot many rounds of 44 mag. and hotly loaded 45 Colt and never considered them for SD against people, only bears. For a revolver, the 357 mag. is an excellent choice, especially with the 125gr. JHP load. It is flat shooting (making longer shots easier) and has plenty of power. IMO, the biggest I would go for defense in a revolver is the 357 Mag. In a semi-auto, 10mm. But to each his own.
Take care.

I'd do a little research on that Crimson Trace laser grip idea. My wife's Ruger LCR shoots .38 +P comfortably. I put CT laser grips on it, and wadcutter loads hurt.

You guys with your 9s and 357s, for shame.
What he really needs is a .454 Casull for edc. I'd suggest the Ruger Super Redhawk with the 9.5" bbl. for that 50 yd shot.It is difficult to free fools from the chains they revere. Voltaire

Post #3 nailed it. L frame 44 mag will get the job done. 44spl is all the velocity you need, any decent lead bullet will get the job done but the Hornady XTP is a good choice also. As far as accuracy, I expect hits at 50yds with my 3" 696.

Re: Advice on an EDC .44 magnum
Given your sparse experience with revolvers in general and shooting one in a defensive scenario specifically, I'd recommend that you try some competition (gun games) with a revolver before you invest heavily in what will become an expensive paperweight. Try IDPA, USPSA or ICORE to get some kind of idea what shooting a revolver in those circumstances is like - then multiply that stress by a factor of three and reduce your hit percentage by about 50% - 75% to arrive at what might happen in a real shooting, not a game.
Your 35 - 50 yard shot is pure fantasy. The only thing somebody would be doing 35 - 50 yards from you is running away - and if by some bizarre happenstance you happen to actually hit that person, you're looking at aggravated assault, or worse, charges, and that's if you manage not to hit that innocent person having lunch in what they though was their secure kitchen until a 240 grain hollowpoint whizzed through the wall and took them out.
Get real and get some experience before you go tilting at windmills with your grandiose Dirty Harry scheme.

Re: Advice on an EDC .44 magnum
If someone is firing at you or someone you can/need to help from 50 yards, you might want or need to return fire, if he doesn't know he is supposed to be running away. In my real experience, I routinely qualified to 50 yards with my 1-7/8" Colt Detective Special. If you can get a 4-inch group at 25 yards, you can get an 8-inch group at 50. Even if the group is bigger, some of the shots will be closer to where you want to be e.g. effective. Agreed that stressed situation modifies outcomes. Just saying, too many think a snubby won't do 50 yards.

Re: Advice on an EDC .44 magnum
I appreciate it man, and here what you're saying.
But I damned well can't do it at 50 yards, with my snubby, not reliably anyway, even after shooting it a fair amount. I can with my 1911. The Kahr arms CW9 can hit 6 inch plates at over 200 yards, but I don't think for a second I could do it with that gun. On a good day I can drill a 600 yard target 8/10 times at 600 yards with an AR. On a bad day I screw up the wind call and miss 10/10. I've learned most guns are far more accurate then the shooter using them.
The standard single wide residential trailer is 80 feet long, or 26 2/3rds yards. I don't make a habit of the measuring the length of people's houses, but a heck of a lot of them are longer then that. It amazes me that people would only want to prepare for the most likely situation, or ignore they might be the only person there to respond. What happens if you're outside and someone goes after a neighbor, or you're in the far side of a box store, or in church?
Pizza Bob. I'll only says that my experience with people being willing to move towards incoming gun fire is different then yours. I'm not an expert in wheelguns, there are people here that are, and I'm humble enough to ask them. Don't mistake that for a lack of training on firearms in general. After all, I wouldn't expect an IDPA shooter to be an expert on grazing or plunging fire, how to shoot them, under-stress or otherwise. I'd also suggest you do some research on penetration testing, because with the exception of bird shot, everything is going through the wall of standard residential construction, from .22 on up. So I'd suggest if you really have a concern about that you might want to get a self defense crossbow. Likewise, I'm not an old ass boomer. I've never seen dirty harry, I assume it is crap, like just about every other bad cowboy movies made back then, & no, I'm not overly impressed with the "almighty power" of the .44. Anything where the rounds weight isn't measured in pounds is a popgun. My work gun fires 30 pound rounds, and I feel —based on experience — it is a good starting point for self defense. Factors, such as, it would be lighter for my to just carry a cop around with me, cause me to — regrettably — consider other options.
You, sir, are mean. I don't hate my hand that much. Plus, there is a huge range of options for .44 magnum (& .45LC) ammo, from stupidly powerful all the way down to .44 special loads, and even the lowly .44 special loads should be more then adequate, which is why I'm less concerned then some about it just becoming a paperweight. I'd really wish .41 magnum was more popular, but it isn't and the ammo selection/choices I would like just are not there.Last edited by PAMedic=F|A=; November 10th, 2019 at 06:48 AM.
