Nobody has mentioned that the departed shot the deer with a muzzleloader. Perhaps he should have reloaded before approaching deer. So, revolver was out of the question, unless he could claim self defense?

And this happened after dark, so I'm wondering how they even found the guy. He called a relative saying he was injured about 7:30.

Not the first time. When I was a kid I read in Outdoor Life that a NY hunter was killed by a deer. The deer was still alive and he kneeled down with a knife to cut it's throat and was kicked in the throat. He died too. If a deer is facing away it is dead? Where do you come up with this stuff? Carry a handgun and a knife? I know people that actually do that. What the heck for? You have a rifle(Or maybe a bow if you are an outlaw). The only sure thing I ever noticed was that a deer with it's eyes closed is NOT dead.

I wonder how long he waited between the time he shot then approached the deer?

I once met up with a six-pointer as I was walking an open trail toward a turkey hunting spot. We stood about 20 feet apart, looking at each other. I was able to set my pack down, get out my 110 camera, and take his photo. I stepped off the trail to my left and started walking. He did the same. I looked back and he had turned and was watching me. It was surreal. I don't know if he was just very used to people, or was trying to figure out what I was, or what.

It never occurred to me that he might charge and gore me. Just had never experienced a deer being dangerous. When I got the film developed, it was just all red with a barely discernible image, it was so old.
There are two kinds of guns. Those I have acquired, and those I hope to.
