Default Butler County Court house lockers

I was in the courthouse today doing some prothonotary work, and happened to notice on the way out that not only do they have them, but they are placed in the most convenient place you could put them.

There are 2 sets of doors to go through before you get into the main lobby, where security is. The lockers are in the outside lobby between the 2 sets of doors. They are the kind of lockers you would find at a roller rink or airport. You put your quarter in and get the key.

Nice in the fact that not only do they supply them, but no security will have any reason to handle your firearm.

I think that in itself is worth the $.25

That's nice, but there is no fee requirement in the law, and there is a receipt requirement in the law. Do you just write yourself a receipt?

I think they skate around the receipt requirement by not actually taking possesion of your firearm.

I agree that there is nothing in the law about any fee's. But like i said before, i personally dont mind paying the 25 cents so as not to have a stranger touching my firearm.

I know, i know, agreeing to the fee is opening the door for them to raise the fee.

But I doubt they would. It would mean replacing the lockers as there only made to take a quarter. I havent used them myself, maybe it spits your quarter back when u return the key like at Aldi's. I'll check tomorrow when i go finish what i was woking on.

Perhaps logical on their part, but absolutely no basis in law. They are required to store the weapons per the law, period.

Ok so i took a better look at those lockers today. They DO NOT take a quarter, they take 2 keys.

The one key is held by security and you keep the other (hence the empty slot that i mistook for a quarter slot). They were pretty busy (as was i) so i didnt ask if they issue a receipt, but i will monday when i hopefully finish what i am working on.

How do you do it? Do you just walk in and tell them you need a locker for your loaded handgun? Do they escort you to the lockers? Are they free?

In every court house that I've checked a weapon at so far, I have never been charged for the service. two times I've been issued a reciept, but for the most part, they just let you keep the key to the locker, and that serves as your reciept.

Butler county is very pissy when it comes to checking a firearm. You'll hold up the line and they'll strongly encourage you to not bring it again, hinting that it's illegal to even bring it in that far.

Just my experience there a few years ago...

Sounds like a similar set up to the one in Montour County. There's a double set of doors before security, and the lockers are inside the first set of doors.

Figured id revive this thread with my experience today. My buddy wanted to get his LTCF after i bought my Sig 2022 9mm at sportsman supply so we went to the court house. I went in declared i had a firearm to check. The officer gave me 3 tokens to put into the lockers. I took the key and was on my way. Very painless and it is free. I asked the officer and he said they collect the coins and reuse them.
