Creating a PAOFA Name

I had used "Emptymag" on the SKS boards forum prior to discovering pafoa.

I looked at the list of member names to see if it was in use and saw a few, but they hadn't posted anything, or hadn't posted more than one or two times, so I figured I could roll with it and not cause any confusion.

A quick look reveals:

None of which are active - possibly ever

Today a coworker asked for help setting up a profile here. I thought it was an odd question since it's pretty simple. Turns out he was stuck at setting up a profile name. He must have tried 10 different versions before finding one that wasn't taken. There's a 'first world problem' thread entry when you've got a common name.

I don't get it.

JohnDoe... too common..., how about JohnDoe1? Nope, taken already, let me try JohnDoeOne. Still unavailable? Try JohnDoe2. Still no dice? How about JohnDoeTwo. There must be an open one eventually. Sooner if you don't insist on using only positive integer as the padding -- JohnDoe1point1 or JohnDoePi should work on the first try...

Or, you can do what I did, go straight for a number when trying to come up with a user name. Gee, Fortyone is taken, let's go with Fortytwo! Easy peasy.

Just kidding, I total got it. It took me a surprising amount of time to come up with a user name of my liking when I joined 10 years ago. Probably thought about it for more than an hour. Eventually I gave up and just went with the ANSWER, the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything.
