Default Barrier Penetration .45 ACP FMJ.

I watched a video of a randomn guy shooting books and the 9x19mm and .40 S&W went through the books, whereas the .45 ACP didn't. I have no idea which brands/loads he was using for each round, but it made me want to test this myself. I'm not going to use books though, that's silly. We all know that surface area and sectional density play factors in how well a round penetrates barriers. I'm just wondering if a good quality .45 ACP 230 gr FMJ would perform so poorly? I have all 3 calibers. Let me see what I can do about putting a YouTube video together. I'll most likely use some 2x4s tapped together. Give me a few days.

Rest assured the .45 is the most deadly round in the world. In fact, the mere sight of a .45 has killed more people on site than, than the Clinton's! Other experts will be around shortly to explain all the other fancy stuff. Until then be very very careful with that .45.

I don't doubt that smaller, faster projectiles penetrated books farther than ANY .45 APC round. What matters to me is how my chosen carry round performs on someone intent on killing me. The 2 X4 test that you are going to run is interesting to me, but will show "how may taped together 2 X4's a particular .45 ACP round will penetrate". It won't speak of it's ability to stop someone intent on killing me.

Something makes me think that shot placement is at least as important as caliber of the weapon.

Bigger diameter bullets also have a larger frontal area to disperse kinetic energy and momentum across.

It is the same reason why small diameter bullets from the 5.7 have a better chance of penetrating body armor than a 44magnum does.

An easy demonstration is: Take a the end of a broom stick and try to put it through your thigh. Then take a sewing needle and do the same.

Yup, the broomstick, not so easy, but that sewing needle, effortless.

Now if you will excuse me, I need to go to the hospital.

I think this goes to show you that carrying a 9mm FMJ is a terrible idea in terms of over penetration. Suppose you must carry FMJ (not sure why), you should go 230gr 45auto.
