Winchester 97's trench sweepers came with a bayonet lug and heat shield. The original tacticool shotgun.

    2 points...
The thing tat goes up - I've heard that so many times and laughed, but never knew where from - Awesome post -THANK YOU !

Jen, THAT is a beautiful shotgun, and with the bayonet, the barrel shroud makes perfect sense (especially in the the trenches - THAT was brutal warfare ! and why the Geneva convention and the Germans wanted to ban them ((thrench-sweepers)) .
In my case for home defense, I don't think it will make any difference. I still might get one just to dress it up. 'Cause 'Merica !

May have been more of a dent protection thing on the military models. Shotgun tubes are really soft.

Serious function. No question. I think it depends more on the individual's technique but I used to burn my hand all the time on my 500 and 590 before putting heat shields on them both.

A couple magazines worth of ammunition depending on the magazine capacity, rate of fire, type of shell, etc. My 9 shot 590 or semi auto 930 (which tends to mysteriously always shoot all 8 as fast as I can pull the trigger ...) are going to heat up and be uncomfortable or dangerous to touch fast because I tend to shoot long strings of continuous fire and shoot relatively fast. My wife claimed the 500 primarily for shooting mini shells and she's never gotten it hot enough to be a problem because they're light loads and she isn't doing 30 or 40 shot drills. I tried to take its heat shield off for my 930 but it wouldn't fit.
