Why are 1911 mags more than AR-15 mags?

This confuses me. A quality 1911 mag (Wilson Combat, for example) is around $30. A good AR-15 mag can be had for under $15. What's up with that? The AR-15 is much larger, so ummmm what's up?

Because, to be blunt, a lot of guys who own 1911s (NOT all of them.) will pay just about any price tag listed for something for their 1911, because to them high price = high quality.

In fact, there are a lot of people like that with any hobby. There are car enthusiasts who'll gladly pay $300 for a part that can be bought for $75, and brag "This cost me $300!", then there are the "gotta have it now"s who go out and buy ConsoleX when it's first released for $373276427 when it's going to drop to $400 in six months (Guilty. I paid almost $700 after tax and shipping for my PS3.)


It comes down to "What price will people pay?"

I don't know. People can be the same way with their EBRs. I'm thinking there has to be some materials/manufacturing process difference too.

my guess is it has to do with the US Government.... we buy AR mags left and right and they are already cranking them out. the USG doesnt use 1911 mags anymore very much...

You can get AR mags from $10, to $50 it's all about what you want.

There's quite a few 1911's around the $500 and under mark so I can't find this to be true.

There are a lot of cars that can be had for cheap, and you can get a PS2 for $100 now.

That doesn't invalidate the high-end argument there, either.

Welcome back Aran, good point in your initial post. "GOOD" 1911 mags ARE expensive because they are...well usually of good quality, and because they say things like Wilson Combat on them.

Exactly, I love my Wilson mags. I just don't know why they cost $30 each when PMag AR mags are like $14 each and everyone seems to love them. I just ordered 5 of them for my AR that I'm picking up tomorrow.
