Exclamation Stolen pistol leads to reckless endangerment charge for Stamford man

STAMFORD — After reporting that his gun had been stolen out of his open car on Monday night, a city man was arrested on a reckless endangerment charge.

Sgt. Jennifer Pinto said police were called to Reynolds Avenue at about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday on a report of a car burglary that involved a stolen gun. The owner of the car, Christopher Jerome, 26, parked his car at about 8:20 p.m. Monday and, thinking that he was going to get back into the car a short time later, did not lock the doors.

When he got up the next morning, Jerome saw that his driver’s side door was open and his gun had been taken out of the unlocked glove box, Pinto said. Jerome presented his pistol permit to officers and told them that he had more firearms in his home.

Because of the circumstances of the theft, police went into the home and took the guns, a semiautomatic Glock pistol, another handgun and a semi-automatic AR-15.

    Reading on:

"Under a new law that went into effect Oct. 1, Jerome was charged with a misdemeanor count of unsafe storage of a gun in a motor vehicle in addition to the reckless endangerment charge. The new law makes it a crime to store a gun in a locked car if it is not also put into a safe, locked in the glove box or stored in the car’s trunk."

So what gave them the right to enter the man's home and steal his property?

No right, Jerome was stupid enough to tell the police he had guns in the house. Maybe he should have taken the advice of many attorneys who say never talk to the police

Stupid or not I fail to see why they had to enter the man's home. The initial crime was not committed there.

Such approach to theft is identical to refusing to take a rape complaint from a woman who dressed provocatively and/or was in a place where such assault would be the norm.

The man probably was required to have permits or that the guns be registered, it being Connecticut, and the police had knowledge of the rest of his guns. Just a guess.

I wonder what law will be enacted in the future, to cover unsafe storage of cans of gasoline, or large kitchen knives.

Gotta hand it to Connecticut legislators though. Glove compartments are very difficult to pry open.

There are two kinds of guns. Those I have acquired, and those I hope to.

I'm going to play Devil's advocate here.

While acknowledging that someone "breaking into" his car is unlawful (if opening an unlocked door can be considered "breaking". At what point would you fine folks like to make this guy be responsible for the dumbassery of leaving an unsecured handgun in an unlocked car?

At what point does it become criminal negligence? When he leaves the gun on the sidewalk?

Had he taken the three seconds required to secure it in the glove box, as unsecure as it is, he at least would have taken an affirmative step toward securing the gun.
