Could you share any information about that you have? Like what hotel would be the best to stay at in Maryland so I can just walk to the train and take it into DC? I too would prefer not to drive in DC.
As I recall, any hotels near metro center are within walking distance to many DC attractions, including the Smithsonian. As the name ‘metro center’ implies, there’s a train nearby too! A quick search of ‘hotels near dc light rail’ should provide you a laundry list of options.

If you want to be able to walk to the train, your best bet is Bethesda. There are a few hotels to choose from. I don't remember what hotel I used there, but it was only a short walk to the train.

Shady Grove, MD is the extreme north end of the red line. There are 10 to 12 hotels within a mile of that station.

I've parked there before and taken the train in a few times. Minimal driving if you park there.

Don't know our schedule for that weekend yet, but really considering taking my son down for this.

It would also help him with his Citizenship in the Nation Eagle Scout merit badge.

Thank you! I will use this to start my research, hopefully I can get something booked this weekend.

    Maybe we need tents too?

I already asked about stuff like umbrellas or backpacks getting flagged by the perimeter security, and I was told they were unaware of anything like that that would be prohibited. Looks like I may try to bring a folding camp chair. I can't stand for 4 hours plus (10 minutes per announced speaker).
