Better safe than sorry is what I always say. I venture out into the big woods, but never more than a mile or so from where the other guys from camp are. We all usually lay out our plans. Cell coverage is spotty. Two way radios are good line of sight. I usually carry some way to start a fire, a few protein bars, water, a whistle, topo map, compass, gps and a first aid kit complete with tourniquet. I hope I don't ever need to use any of the gear, but I have it.
