    Default Tooling up

What do I need to build a complete AR? I’m thinking of actually building one complete. More so for the experience and gained knowledge of doing it.

The reality? Not much. There's a video out there showing a guy put one together on his living room floor with his young child helping. Or, if you like tools, you can go hog wild and outfit an entire shop.

Watch some Youtube videos and decide what you need vs. what you already have.

Plastic mallet, pin punch, screw driver/ hex bit, small piece of wood, channel lock pliers, thick book, castle nut wrench if you're doing an m4 style stock.

Assuming you're going the standard pre-built upper kit route

Raxar pretty much covered it. In reality you can do it with what you probably already have in a basic tool box. There are a whole lot of specialty tools, jigs, vise inserts, etc that make the job easier but they aren't requirements.

This doesn't sound to me like, "how can I slap an AR together as cheap as possible? ", which is how read the answers. If I'm wrong tell me to FO.

Start with a good assembly book that talks about torque wrenches and torque values. It should go into detail about all the tools you would want. Get a completely disassembled kit or just buy parts. You will have a quality experience by learning the right way. You will learn about some little tools that remove frustration and lost or broken parts.

If getting a rifle cheap is the ultimate goal than buying one right now is the way to go. You can't build them cheaper than you can buy them now. Upside down times.
