Henry caliber question

I'm looking at 2 Henry rifles right now, one in .44 and the other in .45-70.

I'm not a hunter, so whichever one I get will be a range toy or shtf high caliber rifle.

Which would you choose, and why?
Price difference is negligible.

I’ve enjoyed both of them in lever action rifles. You really can’t go wrong with either. For the reasons that you’ve mentioned here, me, I’d go with a 44. Ammo is everywhere and is cheaper than 45-70, plus you can pair it up with a revolver and feed them out of the same box of ammo.

Yup for these reasons I'd go .44 mag if just a range/fun gun.

It's nice that you could shoot 44 special as well if you go with the 44.

44 is a fantastic round to reload/handload for....and henrys are great

I have both. 45-70 is more badass...

45-70 is capable of taking any game on this North American continent. This caliber has also taken every big game animal all around the world. A lee handloader and some powder and primers and bullets you will be ready to rock and roll. That being said a 45-70 lever gun can have a horrible recoil.
Last time I was at the range 2 guys came over and was wondering what kind of shoulder canon I was blasting a way with (Marlin 1895 SBL). I also have a Sharps in 45-70. The recoil for that gun is really manageable.

Go with the big boys get the 45-70. I would not hesitate on the Henry 45-70.

45/70 can also be tamed down to a meer nothing with a 405gr cowboy action shooting load.

I have a Marlin 1895 G in .45-70. I recently purchased a Henry Big Boy Steel carbine in .44 magnum. I can't say that I have a favorite, but for a range gun, I would go with the .44.
