Giant Eagle did away with the 3 cents off.

You pay full pump price now, but the purchase goes towards your perks or a discount on groceries.

Let's assume a gas price of $3/gallon. That means it takes 30 fuel perks (at 10 cents each) to get $0/gallon. At $50 worth of groceries per fuel perk, that means you need $50*30 = $1500 worth of groceries to have your gas bill be free. When you use your fuel perks, you can get at most 30 gallons, or 30*$3 = $90. That means you get $90 worth of gas for free every $1500 you spend on groceries, which works out to $90/1500 = 6%.

That means that, if you can get groceries elsewhere for more than 6% cheaper than Giant Eagle, you save money even considering the loss of fuel perks. And really, it's a little bit less than 6%, since you can still get 3 cents off per gallon without spending a penny at Giant Eagle.

All of the supermarkets around here that aren't Giant Eagle (except for Whole Foods), are cheaper by a lot more than 6%. The one thing that comes to mind is steak (I'm a NY Strip guy). Giant Eagle had these sad, thin looking things for $14/pound. Aldi had thicker looking steaks with better marbling for less than $10/pound.
How do you get 30 gallons?

    1. Remove gas cap
    2. Put nozzle in fuel inlet
    3. Start Pump.
    4. Pump until 30 gallons is reached.
    5. Remove nozzle and replace on pump.

Shhhhhhhhhhhh!!! Don't let the secret out!!!

    LOL!
You can always tell it's the last day of the month* when you see 5 or 6 cars at the pumps with several gas cans sitting next to the car!
Fill the car, then fill the cans. Most people don't get their full 30 gallons though, and that's what they are counting on. You EARN up to 30 gallons of the discounted gas, but most people can't fit nearly that much in their car, so they don't utilized the full amount of their earned discount.
The people with gas cans get close - unless they have enough cans.
I fill my truck, then my 5 gallon cans. I ALWAYS get my 30 gallons of discounted gas.

That is the joy of driving a vehicle with a fuel tank the size of a wash tub.

Yeah, there's always a few people with a bunch of 5 gallon cans. Being that I live in a fairly small apartment, it would not be prudent for me to have 15 gallons of gas just sitting around.

    I always get 30 gallons.
My gas cans get rotated and older gas dumped into daily drivers before hand.

Also, i buy gift cards at Giant Eagle and Get go for Home Depot and Red Lobster purchases.
    Those earn perk points

I have gotten 30 gallons as low as 20 cents per gallon..

My aunt started out as a cart wrangler for giant eagle back in the late 70’s early 80’s and she’s worked for them ever since and is now at a corporate level. She was almost giddy over their announcement. I was around her over the weekend, her and I are polar opposites politically. I chose a long time ago not to engage her on political matters because she’s incapable of not taking a debate personally. She was talking up the decision within earshot of me on purpose hoping I would engage, hearing the things she was saying gave a lot of perspective. This move has nothing whatsoever to do with safety of customers. Her reaction shows me that it was her like minded coworkers attempt at scoring a political hit on people they disagree with and nothing more. My aunt does not like the fact that it’s perfectly legal for citizens to walk around armed with firearms.

    200% correct.
