Well if you want to drill out a rivet to replace an ejector go with the 870.

If you want a gun that's serviceable, get a 500.

    Mossberg 500/590's for me.

Even if I had been into Remington shotguns (which I never have been), their current quality would end it for me, as I've seen what they've (Remington) done to my beloved Marlin rifles.

I was looking at both a few years ago. Wasn't impressed with the new 870's, and I didn't want an aluminum reciever.

Wound up getting a Browning BPS from Sportsman's Guide for $375 and an extra $100 off with a rebate. That was the deal of the decade. I did post it in the deals thread after I ordered it.

I was actually looking for a nice used older Wingmaster, and just came across the BPS while browsing the shotgun section on the SG website.

There was a time when Mossberg was looked down on as the "Poor mans gun". Even when they were cheaper, there really was nothing wrong with them.

Here are two pictures of my youngest son. He bought this Mossberg 590 Military shotgun in the parking lot of Targetmasters for $100.00. It was as new, the seller said he only had 1 box through it. It came with a full stock, but my son put a pistol grip stock on. When he got older he put the original stocks back on. That is my Buck made M9 Bayonet.

This is a nice Shotgun but I prefer the Remington 870. I have had one since I was 14. I bought it new with a Poly Choke on it.

So because I all ready have a 18.5” Mossberg 590A1, I ordered the Remington 870 (express) Hardwood Defense. Remington has a $50 rebate going on, so for $300 why not? Anyways, I haven’t shot it yet, but I will say the pump action and trigger are A LOT smoother than my 590A1. The wood looks very nice. The finish isn’t bad, but I read a lot online regarding rust issues. I’ll probably just get the receiver, barrel, and mag tub cerakoted a flat black color like “armor black”. I’m going to run dozens of slugs and buckshot through it but so far I’m very happy.
