    Default Cheapo .308 Hunting Rifle

    Savage Axis

    Mossberg Patriot

    T/C compass

They're all about the same price. I'm leaning torward the Thompson Center.

    Which one and why?

Savage makes a really accurate cheap rifle. I would highly recommend them.

    Stevens M200. Basically a no-frills Savage 110. Ramline stock , no Accu-trigger , but sub-1''MOA and about $250.

I picked up the compass last year.

good enough for hunting. Barrel gets hot quick, so 3 shot groups is what I limit it to.

Just took it out and shot 1 inch group @ 100

I will second the T/C Compass(in .308) gets quite hot after 3 rounds. Doesn’t really help grouping accuracy but hunting rifles are usually 1 cold bore shot so it works good for that.

The Savage Axis is ok for the price point. Trigger is terrible. I think if I had to pick out of your 3 listed this would be my pick but I’d be upgrading the trigger and possibly the stock.

No experience with the Mossberg Patriot.

I think the Ruger American is in the same price category. It’s on par with the Axis but trigger is better-ish trigger. I’d probably buy this over the Axis but would still probably want to upgrade it.

Personally though, what I’d really do is find a decent used Remington 700. Don’t want to start a debate though.

Probably all good but I'd go Axis. Savage makes really accurate cheap rifles and has for a long time.
