Default Any member familiar with night vision optics?

I'm looking to purchase some relatively low-end, inexpensive night vision. Doesn't matter if it's a mono or 2 lenses. Is there anyone who can school me, this is a definite area I'd like to learn more about. Thanks in advance!

I've a limited experience with them. What I share here should be considered average Joe kind of info.

2 main types might help with your research-

    1. Thermal imaging works day & night and uses surface temperatures to create an image. Probably the more expensive of the 2 options. Think FLIR(Forward looking infra-red) *Best for detection
    2. Starlight/Ambient light is taken and magnified to create an image. *Must only be used during darkness, as the sun will harm the electronics *Best for identification

Call TNVC they will tell you through the options. You will be way better off with mono see a lower price point. You are still going to have to spend decent money to get something that isn't garbage. No 2-500$ options that are with buying from what I have researched

I've looked into before from a layman's point of view. What I came up with is "inexpensive night vision" does not exist.

If you don't need night vision don't waste your money on cheap junk, get a nice flashlight you will be better off.

I have one of those cheap $300 monoculars I got for almost free and it's worthless. I figured $50 why not... Should have saved my 50 bucks.

    I agree with the others.
Unless you want to go super low end security camera illuminated stuff, there is really no such thing as good cheap true night vision.
It's the kind of thing you need to spend real money on to get anything military grade, ruggedized, weapons mountable, lifetime warranty, the real stuff.
I second the vote for TNVC, they are not cheap, but they are the real deal, and they know their business.

CHEAP ie made in China or Russia and available for sale here can actually cause permanent eye damage. I was recently in a low light instructor level course and learned of the potential for leaking radiation directly into your eye. Just an FYI
