Carrying of shotgun for self defense while hiking
Have an 1187 police model with eight shots on the tube. Not plugged obviously. I have a hunting license but I will NOT be hunting. Want to carry the gun for self defense against possible coyotes or bears. Have actually had one incident already involving coyotes. Will be going in DEEP. Well past a mile in. Try 3 or 4. Doing a little exploring. My understanding is you can take an ar-15 with a full mag out for things like coyotes and other pests, so trying to figure out if this is do-able. Local people barking no, but again Sunday hike and no hunting.

Probably legal for self defense but expect a big hassle from the game warden. Good chance you will be explaining it to a judge even though you shouldn't have to.

I don’t hike or hunt, but if I did I’d definitely carry a sidearm, no question.
Assuming the shotgun would be carried via sling, which would help with weight distribution. However, in my mind it seems like extra/unneeded weight that would likely weigh on you after a while... certainly on a long hike.

Will you be on game lands or land under their control ......that could make a difference.
If not .... like the one guy said ... you may find yourself explaining it to a judge ..... Because ..... it will come down to what the game warden "THINKS"
Make it a handgun with a LTCF and be done with it would be my view point ......if bumping into a bunny cop is going to be a problem

Going off memory here... There is no closed season on coyote and not orange requirement, so just say you're coyote hunting.

A 12ga "title 1 firearm other" (Mossberg Shockwave etc.) can be carried openly with a LTCF while under our "state of emergency", is short, lightweight can be had for under 250 bucks right now and can be loaded in a vehicle with a LTCF. That's what I would go for.
