Recommendation for 1911
I am wanting a 1911 to fill a void in my collection.
Any recommendations on an American made 1911 under $600?
Looking for something akin to a GI model. Parkerized or whatever is fine, nothing fancy required, just want a shooter that doesn't require a lot of tinkering to be reliable. I would even consider 9mm. I have no experience with 1911s and don't know where to start.

I don't have one, but I have seen positive feedback on the Rock Island Armory 1911s. They are within your budget.

American made, GI looks, and in your price range means Kahr Auto Ordnance. Their GI model can be made to look like a passable copy of a WWII GI 1911A1 with just a little work.

Well first of all , those grips gotta go. Repro USGI brown plastic grips can be had for $5.00/pr. Other than that , ?
My worn but real USGI 1943 Remington Rand for comparison.

Re: Recommendation for 1911
The best bang for the buck in terms of quality and price for a 1911 under $600 and a GI model probably comes from the Philipines in Rock Island Armory. I like American made Kimbers but have heard nothing but good things about Rock Island 1911's.
I have a number of polymer guns and regularly carry my Glock 43, but a few weeks back I bought another Kimber (Stainless Ultra Carry, a beater 1911 to carry) and forgot how beautiful 1911's are compared to the plastic guns, as my 1911's were in my gun safe. Have an order for a set of stag grips to make it into my Longmire gun.The USA is now a banana republic. Only without the bananas....or the Republic.

Springfield Armory Defender is a great buy for about $550 but I have seen cheaper if you shop around.. 3 dot sights, left side safety, wood grips. Match grade barrel...
I am very impressed with mine... Shot 100 rounds in 4 different types of mags and only had a fail to feed with Sig HP ammo in a Wilson Combat mag
