I was kinda hoping for feedback on this particular auctioneer. I personally never heard of them before.

I have patronized his gun auctions before. OK to deal with and actually did well once or twice. His facility is kind of a dive, or at least it was when I went. Pity my funds are lacking.

Possibly folks are deterred by this:

"ALL FIREARM LAWS APPLY - WE ARE FFL - $20.00 PER FIREARM TRANSFER FEE - $5.00 FFL TO FFL TRANSFER FEE ."

It seems unusual for an FFL to charge a transfer fee for guns being sold by the FFL, other than the PICS fee. Do we know if there's an additional buyer's premium?

I like auctions, in general, but the fees are creeping up at some of them. Alderfer's (last time I was there, which was some years ago) was charging a buyer's premium, a seller's premium, sales tax, and I believe a transfer fee for guns, and sales tax on the fees as well, all of which made it less attractive to buy or sell via an auction.

Sure, a seller could look around and see that bidders would sometimes bid $100 for something selling for $90 online, but the seller wouldn't get that $100, and the buyers are hoping to pay $50, which they often do (it's why people go to auctions). Smart buyers willing to pay $100 for something have to discount their bid so that after taxes and fees it doesn't exceed $100, and most folks don't have the math skills to work backwards ($100 less 6% sales tax, then 90% of that amount to cover the buyer's premium, then lop $20 for the transfer fee . . . )

Estates sell at auction because it's easier to get rid of lots of guns quickly that way, and the heirs and creditors can't dispute an auction price. But auctions aren't as good as they were before the suits got involved and snuck in the fees.

Yes , $5 FFL to FFL seems odd.

Alderfer's is under new ownership and part of some big national auction network. Last dealing I had with them was they charge the buyer 20% cash (23% check/CC) and dock seller 20% of the hammer price. So for a gun that hammers at $1000 , the buyer pays $1200 plus 6% sales tax , plus $20 paperwork . plus $5 trigger lock for non-FFL. Owner/consigner gets $800.

If I went to a gun shop, selected a gun from their rack, and was charged $20 "for the transfer", I'd walk away.
