Smith Revolver Cylinder Release Button Rattle?
I was cleaning my Smith 638(last few years production) and noticed the cylinder release button is somewhat "loose" on the screw. The button works 100% fine and is the screw itself is not loose. It just seems the button can be moved around in the screw. Again, it works fine and locks up solid. Are all the newer ones like this? I have a 70s era Model 10 and it does it but ever so slightly.

Shitty fit. Better than scratching the frame I guess. You could buy an aftermarket and fit it.

Send it to S&W on their dime, I'm sure they'll have you fixed up. Give them a call. Lifetime warranty.
Do you have another carry gun in the meantime?

Re: Smith Revolver Cylinder Release Button Rattle?
I'm going out on a limb and say, if the screw is tight and the cylinder opens fine, what you have is pretty normal play.
Both of my J frames have some movement, my older model 60 has more play than my newer model 442. They don't actually "rattle" but the 60 could be construed as a rattle. The Hostler

I have a 637 that's tight and a 649 that's loose but doesn't affect it's operation or get worse with time. Other long time revolver owners I know have similar experiences with S&W revolvers.

Thanks all! Kind of what I figured. I am going to roll with it but just watch it.

Re: Smith Revolver Cylinder Release Button Rattle?
Whiterook ! great post. read through the post's and decided I'd check my 649 and 657 Mountain Gun, both late 90's production. The 649 has some considerable rock up and down which I've never noticed before and the release does have just the slightest movement independent of the screw, almost in-perceivable, had to see it with a magnifier glass.
The 657 though had considerable movement around the axis of the screw when I realized the screw was loose about an 1/8th turn, snugged it down tight and the play stopped, It still rocks like the 649 but not as much, went back to the J frame and checked the screw it was good and tight..Ill be watching the Mountain Gun screw more closely now, perhaps a drop of locktite is in order....good info and thanks !
PS...Ive had the 657's Mainspring tension screw work loose on one occasion causing light primer strikes, and I do not shoot hot loads from it...check them screws! like riding an old Harley

Re: Smith Revolver Cylinder Release Button Rattle?
Just measured the movement of the release on my S&W 36.
.055" vertical play, approximately 1/32" in and out, and fore and aft has zero "looseness"....but then, that's the direction governed by the pressure of the spring. There are two kinds of guns. Those I have acquired, and those I hope to.
