San Jose mayor pushes new gun liability insurance requirement
Recalling the victims he met in the hospital who want to see the senseless tragedies stop, the mayor on Monday proposed requiring gun owners in the nation’s 10th largest city to either carry liability insurance or pay a fee to cover taxpayer costs — such as emergency response and medical care — associated with firearm violence.
“Gun ownership is an inherently dangerous activity,” Liccardo told reporters at City Hall, adding that simply offering thoughts and prayers is not adequate anymore. “We have to act to protect our communities.”
Liccardo likened the proposal to attempts to lower smoking rates and car crashes. Motorists, he pointed out, are required to carry auto insurance, and tobacco consumption is taxed both to discourage smoking and cover the costs of smoke-related illnesses and death.

Re: San Jose mayor pushes new gun liability insurance requirement
When you operate in a vacuum its no wonder everything sounds so wonderful, until someone questions their logic or lack thereof. Put some balance and perspective to this so called tragedy and the need to protect communities...why don't we look at the senseless deaths committed by Dr.s every day in medical mistakes...500 per day. Now that is a tragedy and one that needs to be addressed.
Want to eliminate the "gun problem"? Mandate everyone has to own and carry a gun...crime will come to a screeching halt.
Time to turn off the vacuum.

Driving a car and smoking aren't natural rights specifically mentioned in the founding document of the nation. What of the poor who can't afford such insurance? He'd be basically taxing their god given right.

Since the criminals are the ones responsible for these costs, they should be the ones required to have insurance.
Doesn't that make sense?Corruptissima re publica plurimae leges

I'm sure the criminals will rush out to buy that insurance. I can see the ad, "planning a mass shooting? Don't forget to buy liability insurance".
