Depends if ya get one carried by a street cop or desk jockey. The 80's were full of great deals on police trade-in revolvers as most dept's were going full-tilt into autoloaders. Some looked brand new , some looked like they were dragged behind their patrol car.
Most sellers would offer 'hand select' grades for an additional $10-20.

I’m an armorer for my agency. It all comes down to how old is the pistol and which person carried it. Some LEOs do a lot more training than other LEOs. Most guns fall into 2 categories: 1) shot a lot by firearm enthusiast, but well taken care of, and 2) never shot outside of mandatory training and rarely cleaned. You’d be surprised what is found inside pistol slides and frames. Dried up coffee from being spilled in a car or at desk is most common. Regarding police trade in Glocks, I rather pay an extra $100 and get a new blue label gun.

I agree with others, generally I think of them as a good. Most spend their entire life in a holster so finish wear is the norm. I think that the vast majority of LE guns are not shot a great deal. I know quite a few LE officers and most of them aren't necessarily hardcore "gun" people, most only shoot during qualification.

I know a person who collects LE trade in pistols that have an interesting department marking on them and he has never once remarked that it was worn out or unusable.
