Default Are you more likely to be shot with your own gun.

This article is from New Zealand. I also read a similar article from South Africa this morning. We hear the claim a lot. How true is it? I did not fact check the article.

Fact check: Are you likely to be shot with your own firearm? an hour ago 15 views by Luc Haasbroek -

A claim is often circulated that firearm owners are four times more likely to be shot with their own weapon than the other way around - However, there is no reliable data to back up this claim - The claim dates back to a 1999 study, but the researcher who conducted the study says that his findings do not support the conclusion

The claim that it is four times more likely that you will be shot with your own firearm than you it is that you will successfully use your gun in self-defence is widely shared online. Research from 1999 and 2000 is often used to back up this stats. However, there is in fact no reliable data to support this claim.

This claim has been shared widely - in safety campaigns, on social media and on via various media outlets, Briefly.co.za has gathered. The stat is often linked to research done by Antony Altbeker almost two decades ago. However, Altbeker himself says that his research does not support the claim, according to AfricaCheck. His study found that people who used a firearm during a home invasion were four times more likely to be fired upon by assailants than those who did not. However, this is a very different to the claim that your own firearm is likely to be used against you.

Additionally, Altbeker admits that his study as "data quality issues", meaning that even if his findings did support the claim, the study is not reliable enough to draw solid conclusions from. Furthermore, there are no more recent studies to support the initial claim. In other words, the stat that you are four times more likely to have your own gun used against you than the other way around is not accurate.

    b) train so it doesn't happen
    c) if the bolded is true, even more reason to don body armor if time permits

This was always something said especially to the poor weak defenseless women anytime one mentioned carrying or owning a firearm. Many TV shows and movies also perpetuated this myth over and over again making it sound like every criminal was going to be on top of you within seconds and had the disarming skills and speed of Jet lee and the editing department at paramount movies.

The CDC's own stats that tell of the 200k to 2,000,000 times a year a firearm is used in defense of one's life kind of disprove all that bullshit especially the fact that in many cases the firearm is never discharged.

    You are overthinking this claim.
You are way more likely to be shot by your own gun if you own a gun than if you do not own a gun.
I believe that is what liberals are actually saying while trying to make you think it is a rational argument.

Just for clarification, I am not asking how likely are you to be shot with your own gun..... I was just summing up the article with the statement.

Yes they say that all the time regarding having a gun when children are also in the house.

However they did and still do push the having your gun taken from you and used against you in a defensive situation.

    3 second google search.
