Are there any stats publicly available in regard to how many legal full-autos are out there? Obviously, the info exists.

I wonder if a FOIA request could get any of it, absent owner info, of course.

Jeff sent the following email to TTAG Central Command:

Robert,
I see many writers on your site making statements about how many machine guns exist on the NFRTR. To be sure, lots of folks have speculated on the number since NFATCA obtained the transferable number ~10 years ago from then NFA Branch Chief, Ken Houchens, at Knob Creek. Back then, the transferable count was a little over 182,000.

For several years NFATCA has been “battling” DOJ/ATF for release of current numbers. After a rejection and several well-fought appeals we have the numbers. The total number on the books as of February 24, 2016 is just under a half million:

Pre 86 (transferables): 175,977
Sales Samples (pre May keepers): 17,020
Restricted 922(o) (posties): 297,667

I'd love to see specifics, but I'm sure that's not possible. What got me thinking was the claim that an "AK-47" was used in the Garlic Festival shooting. Are there AK-47s ("real" ones) in circulation? Probably, but the probability of that claim being a fact is much less probable than it being a semi-auto variant, or SKS type (based on some different reports).

Of course, if an accurate identification is ever released, I'm sure finding it will be like hunting a unicorn.

"Ak47" is not the name for a full auto (unlike m16vs ar15) but yes there are transferable ak out there, whether they are type 1, 2, 3, or akm or another variant. Ak47 has become the generic term for all ak types.

So is there a way to "name" a gun of this variety so that the type of fire is revealed, or in this case, does that need to be a separate distinction? Surely the original design by Mikhail Kalashnikov was select-fire capable, as it was intended for military use.

Not really, because there are so many variants and the model numbers were used on the semi autos once rebuilt in the USA.
