Default Not worth selling your firearms to dealers

I took one of my pistols in to a gun shop that I also go shooting at to see what kind of price I could get for my pistol.
Just to let you it was a FN FNS9 that was new in the box.
Bought a few years ago and never shot it.
Just placed it in my safe.
Anyway took it in and one guy and he ask what I was looking to get for it.
    I told him around $400.
So he and another person behind the counter checked it out and I thought is was a sell util he went to the back room and brought another guy out.
    Kind of unfriendly too.
He ask what I was asking for it and I said around $400.
He shook his head no no no.
I can hardly give you half of that.
I have those here and they arn't selling.
So at that point I told him straight up that it is going on Gunbroker and I will get what I am asking for it.
I aslo told him yours won't sell here because you are asking to much.
He just looked at me like he wanted to give me another offer, but I left.
    Enough said.
By the way this is in Montgomery county.

It’s always like that when trying to sell used firearms regardless if they are fired or not to a gun shop. If you get 50% of its current value your doing good. Sometimes you will do better on a trade or through consignment with a shop.

Gunbroker is going to rape you in fees, from what I hear they have substantially gone up since I last used it several years ago. Face to face deal on here or other local sites with a transfer is typically the best way. If it’s a quality piece and it’s priced right it will sell.

A quick look on GB indicates that you will have a hard time getting $400 for it, it looks like $300 might
    be doable.

    ,

I have no love for selling directly to a dealer for the reasons stated above but I will say in this instance I just checked GB and their sold history for a NEW FNS9 with 3 mags shows only two sold in recent history ( and only 1 looks truly new) with low of $345 to a high of $365 so in this case they may not be too far off for what they'll offer to make a profit on resale.

Regardless (as also stated above) you're always better private, especially local with GB being the next step.

You will never get 100% street value from anybody who is reselling the stuff, regardless of what it is (cars, boats, comic books, guns, etc.). Remember that they have process the new inventory (spend time doing paperwork, cleaning, etc), then keep it in inventory for as long as it takes to sell (overhead includes rent, electric, inventory taxes, etc), and then when they sell it - they need to make some sort of profit....

Add that all together and you can't blame these guys for offering WAY less than you know they are going to sell it for. F2F (obviously with a legal pics transfer) is the only way you can reliably get "street value" of the item.

Gun shop is there to turn a profit. They probably won't get $400 for a used FNS9. Then they have overhead.

Like mentioned above. Sell it here in the classifieds

Why would a dealer pay you as much or more for a used pistol as they can buy a new one for wholesale?

I remember during the 80's , people would come in a with a copy of Shotgun News and wanted to buy guns at the prices listed. But those were wholesale dealer prices.

Never sell a firearm. I have, and every single time I've regretted it afterwards.
