Long shot, but did you report it stolen? Including with the company?

If the moving people stole it why do you characterize it as taken by mistake?

We do not know if it was missing before we moved
Checked with all people (moving and clean out people)
We know these people personally they are friends and relatives
Do not want to report it stolen because we do not actually know what happened to the pistol

If none of the friends and relatives that may have had access to the gun do not have it, then it was stolen.
Tell your friends and relatives if it can't be located soon, then you will have to report it as stolen. After a week or so of not being able to locate it, do so.
IANAL. I don't give legal advice. I'm only stating my OPINION.
(Did I really need to say that on an Internet forum? LOL)

Could your father in law have sold it?
