We went through this with my mom.

There isn't one "best" hearing aid for everyone. There are many variables such as the type and severity of hearing loss, and the length of time it has gone on.

There is also a "getting used to being able to hear again" period. Your brain has to adjust, after not having proper aural input.

The sound signals to your brain may be clear but you may perceive them as garbled for a while.

I’m watching this thread, because I’ll need them at some point. I’ve heard that hearing aids are very expensive.

I’m certain that running lawn mowers growing up did me in... that and AC/DC blasting on box speakers.

I work for a hearing aid company so I mostly know about our main brand and models. I can tell you that we just released the Oticon Opn S, which I purchased a set for my father and am in the process of purchasing a set for my father in law. The new technology is incredible, but they can get expensive if you do not have great hearing aid coverage through your insurance.

If I cut the grass without ear pro, after a 1/2 hour I'd swear that a Huey is following me.

i am right in the middle of a 30 day trial of the Lyric 3, completely in the canal, 24/7 unit. Prior to trying these out, I have for two years been wearing behind the ear, receiver in canal from COSTCO, their Signature 7.0 series. Lyric are $3500/year on a subscription basis; estimated that each pair has a useful life of between 6 weeks to 2 months. As the batteries deteriorate, they work less effectively. End of usefulness, back to audiologist, change em out and go till the next need to change. My hearing losses, 92% down in LE, 12% down in right ear. Speech in noise is in profound loss range on LE. Worst feature is this: while i can remove the aid, I cannot replace it; removal is itself not a simple procedure; do it wrong, as did I, and bruise/scrape thin skin of ear canal. Second downside is this: if one or both go "belly-up" while you are in a place where there is no Lyric dealer, you cannot get a replacement, and that assumes that a Lyric dealer in, say, Nome, AK, would honor the agreement made in Philly, PA. HA. So that means learning the removal protocol and carrying backups.

Upside? Best quality of sound reproduction I've had since I started using aids back 10 years ago. We hear binaurally, not in stereo. We hear analogically, not digitally. No normal ear has intrinsic bluetooth capability So, the Lyric most closely duplicates my natural hearing. more important, they fit perfectly under my MSA Sordin Supremes; they have absolutely NO wind noise acoustic degradation. I can increase the volume more in my left ear relative to the right in order to compensate for the greater loss on my left. I can shower with them; just turn them to "sleep" mode at night and that allows me still to hear "things that go bump." My trial expires in a couple of weeks. And I'll likely try out a pair of digital aids, probably Phonak BTE and RIC units w/ BT capability at an equivalent price.

There's an excellent link to digital aid reviews on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCpi...d6tMcuN7AEJ-1A Dr. Cliff claims USMC Scout Sniper status in the sandbox and also reports a hearing loss. I have found his video reviews very helpful. HTH

Did you hear Polacks are wearing condoms on their ears? They're afraid of catching hearing aids!

Man, that has to be circa 1985...at the height of the AIDS scare, and when Pollock jokes were still in.

And back when America had a sense of humor.
Matter of fact, I'm going to make it a point to revisit some Don Rickles shows.
