Re: How many times do you rack the slide before being confident it’s not loaded?
Twice with a visual.
Unless I'm around my ex, then I just hold it to her forehead and pull.

It was a brand-new gun with box and papers, but the mother swore that it didn't come with any instructions. Her argument was that the shop was negligent in not handing her the instructions (which came with every gun, were free, and could be obtained for free from the manufacturer); that because the mother didn't get safety instructions that this translated into the neighbor boy being unaware of the danger.
Philly juries. It's not their money, so why not spread it around?
BTW, this was not my case, I heard about it later from the shop, and looked up the details in the reporter.Attorney Phil Kline, AKA gunlawyer001@gmail.com

I rack multiple times and visually look. Multiple times is a failsafe for reasons already mentioned but also if there were a round in the pipe it gives multiple opportunities for the extractor to hook the round and eject it.
I do this for unloading and then always repeat before pulling a trigger to dry fire.

I drop the mag. Empty the mag. Reinsert the mag. Pull the slide back. If it doesn’t lock, I do it again and push up the lock. I shouldn’t have had to, so I’m inspecting for that too along with checking the chamber by look and feel. It’s easier to lock a slide with the empty mag and it test the working of the slide lock. I’m always expecting a slide lock so if I don’t get it I am on alert a level above. I’m not slingshotting the slide, l’m riding it.
On ranges I remove the mag and manually lock the slide. It’s whats expected.
After reassembled from cleaning or inspection I’ll rack the slide several times. The Gun is the Badge of a Free Man

A cop that just pulled a Davis out of some thugs shorts has other things to pay attention to than shining his flashlight into a chamber to make sure a round isn't in it. Racking the slide like that is something that can be done while keeping your attention elsewhere

Re: How many times do you rack the slide before being confident it’s not loaded?
I rack it as many times as it takes.
Seriously though, I drop the mag, pull the slide back and lock it, look down the mag well out the bottom and in the chamber, it don't get more not loaded then that. With shotguns, I also check the tube to make sure a round isn't hung up inside. I had an older shotgun and on one occasion, I checked the chamber, racked the slide five times and a round chambered on the fifth rack, luckily before putting it away I checked it again. That could have be a bad day.
I check them before I put them in the safe and again taking them out. Guns are checked every time I pick them up, except the one I keep loaded.Last edited by :-); June 10th, 2019 at 07:05 AM.
