    Class dismissed.
I was always taught that a magazine is what you use in an M-16, and a clip is something you can use to load that magazine or an enbloc clip for an M-1. I trained with the M-16A2 with an underslung M203. So class sent to detention?

Unfortunately I have to agree with the socialists. This is actually in their "Rifles for Rookies" manual.

Concerning colloquialisms, ammunition, and gun terminology is this important point: In
movies, TV shows, music, and daytime news broadcasts you will hear the words “clip” and
“magazine” used interchangeably. This is incorrect. A magazine is not a clip. A clip is not a
    magazine.
The magazine functions by moving the cartridges stored in the magazine into a
position where they may be loaded into the chamber by the action of the firearm. A
firearm loads rounds into the chamber from a magazine.

A clip is a device that is used to store multiple rounds of ammunition together as a
unit, ready for insertion into a magazine. The purpose of a clip is to load a magazine.

It's gonna rain tomorrow so I'm gonna load some bullet tips and powder in some empty shell casings.

I know what a shell looks like (many variations of them, BTW). But have never seen a casing. Is it the box they come in?
Root : shell case. Conjugate : case casing cased. The shell is casing the powder primer and bullet in one envelope. The shell case is the casing of the round of ammunition. Brass cartridge case is a brass casing. The box is a type of casing aka box of bullets, cartridge box

All that is easy on the ears compared to tips and heads. Tips and heads usually hit your ears at the same time the beer breath reaches your nose.

Ahh but a detachable magazine clips into the gun. Heck it even goes "clip" if you listen to it.
