Assuming we're talking about rifle cleaning, I always use a bore guide and clean from the breech.

I use Hoppes # 9 for regular light cleaning. Wipe Out overnight if the bore doesn't immediately clean with Hoppes. And, from time to time, a good reaming with JB Bore Paste. That cleans copper, carbon, and leaves a nice shine.

Thank you for that. Very helpful. So, #9 does contain ammonia, but it is the least prevalent ingredient. It would be more accurately described as 'kerosene based'

That also explains why they sell a separate copper removing product, which surely has a much higher concentration of ammonia.

As I recall, Hoppe's #9 originally contained benzine (I got to using it in the early 1950s). Sometime around the end of the 60s benzine went on the carcinogenic list, and it was removed. I swear it never cleaned as well after that.
There are two kinds of guns. Those I have acquired, and those I hope to.

Rifle or pistol. Why are you trying to remove copper from the barrel?

Both rifle and pistol. Trying to remove it, if it's there, so the barrel will look clean. Why leave it in?

I use Hoppes #9 copper solvent and replace my brushes every so often. Bronze brushes do wear out from brushing steel barrels over time and copper solvent will make them deteriorate because copper is part of the make up of bronze. Run a wet patch through first, never brush a dry barrel, then a dipped brush, dip and brush a until you're satisfied it's cleaning the bore, then run patches through until they come up clean. Oil as necessary with oil dipped patches.

I always use paper bags from grocery store to point the barrel into while I'm running wet patches and brushes through the barrels to catch drippings and spray. Then I'm able to put all the cleaning supplies in the bag in outside trash can. That stuff stinks... bad if left in an inside trash can. Many people apparently do things differently and some don't even bother to clean their guns a big mistake made by the US Army when they began to issue the M16 in the early 60's. I clean my guns after shooting them and then let them breathe before putting them away. I make sure to get all the solvent out of my carry guns before they go back into the holster to carry because as I've already mentioned the solvent is very odorous and quite noticeable indoors to others... Jennifer, is that a new perfume? You'd better get your money back

I use a bore snake and Hoppes #9 but I leave the copper in the barrel until I "really" clean it. but never too clean... lol Clean spick and span barrels don't make tight groups.
I just run a pad with oil through it until it comes out clean and done. Don't over clean it till it looks like new.

Bore snake and Hoppes #9 here too... and no rifle or pistol gets put away dirty after a range trip, ever...

...otherwise, I’d lay awake in bed all night thinking about it.
