Barrels have some minor imperfections very similar to a PA road. Some copper buildup in these imperfections goes a long way to maintaining accuracy. Similar to snow filling in potholes and making a smoother ride.

Cleaning every time after shooting can actually cause more harm than good.

For example and every barrel is different but I have a 20" Shillen ultramatch 223 barrel and it gets cleaned when the groups start opening up usually around 400 rounds or so. That is usually 8-10 range trips.

I don't do much shooting from a bench and zero from a rest. The degree of accuracy that could be affected by removing copper fouling is negligible to me. Also, 400 rounds last more like two range trips. I'm more concerned with keeping firearms clean than squeezing out every bit of accuracy.

Pirate, squirt some cleaner down it, use a bore brush, and if your real froggy run a patch through it.

I just run a pad with oil through it until it comes out clean and done. Don't over clean it till it looks like new.
Going to ask a dumb question, but here goes: do you run the bore snake through the barrel dry or soaked in solvent? There is a little brush embedded within the bore snake that may be eaten away by solvents. Also, can you wash a bore snake?

Yes you can and many do. Yes, you can wash them in dawn and water and squeeze dry and let air dry. Some people put them in socks and in the washer, not me.

The answer to bore cleaning is to not let the bore foul in the first place. The way to do this is to only shoot Moly-Coated bullets. Sierra and Hornady both used to offer them although only in a small range of match bullets. The coating process is very simple, put 200 bullets and a 1/4 teaspoon of moly into a vibratory tummler filled with hardened steel ball and run for a few hours.
