    Default Name that action !

This action has me baffled. I can not find out what it is anywhere. There are no markings on it. Serial number is on the barrel. A proof mark of a crown with cross on top and the letters PB on the underside of the action by the recoil lug. Obvious it is a military rifle as it has a ladder rear sight and clip charger slot. Chamber casting mikes out the caliber as 6.5 cal. Not a 6.5 rimmed round. Possibly 6.5X54 Mannlicher Schonauer. Has a M88 type extractor but a solid bolt head of controlled round feed. Split rear bridge. Cock on closing bolt. Box magazine is a staggered round feed with detachable floor plate. Fixed ejector at 6 O'clock position in action. No bolt release on the side. You pull the trigger to the rear to release the bolt. At some time the bolt received impact damage that broke off the bolt knob and broke off pieces of the cocking cam slot and a piece on an internal sleeve. Also firing pin tip is broken off. Any one have ideas ? Photo attached. 100_3335.JPG100_3338.JPG

Any chance it is 6.5 X 52 (Carcano) cartridge? PB brings Pietro Beretta to mind. Possibly an Italian variant that never made the big time?

Edit: just FYI I stumbled across this info.

there is another unusual feature that makes the 6.5 mm Carcano a unique rifle. While all 6.5 mm calibre rifles share the same bore diameter (6.5 mm or .256"), the diameter of the bullet fired by these rifles is, of course, larger at .264". This corresponds to the groove (riflings) diameter of these rifles and, in the majority of 6.5mm/.256" calibre rifles, this diameter is .264". The only two exceptions to this are the 6.5x54 mm Mannlicher-Schoenauer, firing a bullet .266" in diameter, and the 6.5x52 mm Carcano, firing a bullet .268" in diameter.

its a Japanese Carcano in 6.5. They were made for either the navy or the home guard type thing but never saw real use. No markings because they didn't want people finding out where it came from.

Does that mean it would be chambered in 6.5 Jap? (6.5 X 50)
