    Default Spring Gobbler Season 2019

I didn't go hunting on opening day, I'll be taking a friend of mine from over near Quarryville up to the Poconos near Jim Thorpe for our first hunt together, tomorrow Monday 4/28.

I've taken a gobbler each of the last two Springs where we'll be hunting. I haven't been up on this SGL since last Fall and didn't see much turkey activity but it seems to be a great area for Spring gobblers. I've hunted this area over the last 20 or so years and it can be up and down in terms of turkey population. Wish us well.

Share any stories you wish to about your gobbler hunts here, and enjoy God's beauty and bounty, most of all be safe. - Garry

Good luck to EMD and friend! Turkeys are arguably the most challenging of the PA Triple Trophy. (deer, bear, turkey for you who may not know)

Still trying to get my first turkey. I missed last year (twice) at 40 yards... I know my Benelli patterns high, but, I guess I didn't account for that enough. Pretty embarrassing. Moreover, it was near the trail cam I put out, so the whole spectacle got caught on camera.

Did more patterning this year, and while I hate to compensate with gadgets, I do have Federal HW7 (it was on sale) and a red dot on my shotgun now. Interestingly enough, it patterned better with the stock full choke than the turkey choke I had lying around. Just got back from the range where I was double checking my zero and practicing shooting while seated. And I was practicing my diaphragm call on the way home.

I think turkey season is my favorite, even though it's the one season I've hunted that I haven't gotten anything. That feeling you get when you hear (and if they're close enough, feel) one gobble back at you... there's nothing else like it.

Went out first day with a buddy and his son. Saw nothing. Heard a coyote for a while. Walked around the Lowe’s and Wal-mart Saturday evening, just goofing off because we were bored. We started asking people if “they saw a nun run in here?”

That will get you some funny looks even in a Wal-mart. Ate at Red Robin, felt underdressed because of all the Prom couples in there. I pulled about three feet of register tape out of the kiosk thingy on the table and made a beautiful necktie out of it.

So, all in all, Turkey Opener was a roaring success.

Hey TooBig, don't sweat it, I missed my first Fall gobbler at 14 yds. He walked away but he never heard another sound out of that left ear. I aimed at his head and sent a baseball sized swarm of lead pellets just past his bird brain. I have always aimed at the juncture of the waddles and feathers ever since and it's worked well. Have faith and enjoy.

Went out yesterday in Potter County; nothing but ridiculously high winds on the mountain side. One more try tomorrow.
