Why would anyone want to transfer a long gun?
I found a gun I want to buy locally, but the seller wants to do a transfer through a ffl. I am a CC holder.
I have nothing to hide. I just feel that it's a waste of money
And really my property is none of the governments business.

Some people like the CYA aspects of going through an FFL. Personally, if it was something I really wanted, I'd ask the seller to cover the transfer since it's not something that's required. If it's something common, I'd just pass and wait.

So many ways to respond; the seller is a Fudd, or he's paranoid, or he doesn't know the laws, or he thinks that will absolve him from whatever, or he was given bad info from another Fudd, or a gun store, or a LEO, or a 3nd cousin twice removed, or, or. SIGH

Well his property is unfortunately kind of "registered" to him, even though it shouldn't be. If you buy it and give it away or sell it to someone else and something happens, he will be the first guy they come knocking. If he is like me, a bill of sale you don't legally have to keep, can get lost over the years.

If he was going to go through an FFL "to be safe", he should have put it on consignment or traded it in and avoided all this.

Tell him to knock off 50 bucks and buy it. When you take it to an FFL that knows the law, they may tell him to just sell it to you outright to save the transfer fee and you would be positive 50 bucks.

I sleep much better when I know I sold my rifle with background check. I usually drop $25 off price for that alone. You got your reasons. I got mine.

I'll gladly sign a bill of sale. To show a transfer has taken place. And I'll show him whatever he needs for identification. I don't even care if it's in front of a cop on camera! I really have nothing to hide. But I'm drawing the line at doing a transfer.

One reason is that a transfer through a FFL would absolve the seller of all liabilities should the buyer use the firearm criminally or negligently. It would also absolve the seller of the possibility of selling it to a prohibited person.

It is possible that a recently prohibited person may still hold their LTCF, failing to turn it in.
