It will be interesting to see what happens here. A criminal being chased by the police was shot by a homeowner. The homeowner was arrested for aggravated assault.

There has been speculation on this forum before about whether or not having signs like “tresspasser will be shot” could work against you if you ever find your self involved in a shooting. I wonder if this guys signs about shooting tresspasser played a role in his arrest.

Homeowner arrested after shooting driver of stolen vehicle in St. Paul
ST. PAUL, Minn. (FOX 9)

- The driver of a stolen vehicle was shot by a homeowner in St. Paul, Minnesota while fleeing from the scene of a crash Tuesday morning, according to police.

Police say the homeowner, a 36-year-old man, has now been arrested and booked into Rasmey County Jail on suspicion of aggravated assault.

St. Paul Police Department spokesperson Mike Ernster said the incident started when officers attempted to stop a vehicle that was driving recklessly. The vehicle, which they discovered was stolen, fled from the officers, speeding down side streets and alleyways. The officers eventually lost sight of the vehicle.

A short time later, officers learned of a crash involving the stolen vehicle at the intersection of Payne Avenue and Jenks Avenue East. Several people had reportedly fled from the stolen vehicle into the surrounding neighborhood.

As officers began to search for the occupants of the vehicle, they heard gunshots. They located the driver of the stolen vehicle suffering from multiple gunshot wounds lying in the yard of a house on the 600 block of Cook Avenue. A man armed with a handgun, who identified himself as the homeowner, was found with him.

The homeowner cooperated with police and surrendered the gun, Ernster said. The victim was taken to Regions Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police are investigating what led to the shooting. A sign in the window of the home where the shooting occurred reads, "No trespassing. Violators will be shot. Survivors will be shot again!"

The victim, the driver of the stolen vehicle, was wanted in St. Paul for a different auto theft.

No one was injured in the crash. The other occupants of the stolen vehicle have not been located.

Things went from bad to worse for a suspected auto thief who was shot after allegedly stealing a car, crashing it, then hiding on a property with posted warnings that trespassers would be capped.

St. Paul, Minn., police apprehended a man Tuesday morning, after he’d been shot more than once in a yard marked with a sign reading "No Trespassing. Violators will be shot. Survivors will be shot again!” according to Twin Cities Pioneer Press.

The suspect’s name is not given in the report, which says he was wanted by police in connection with a prior auto theft. He is expected to survive his injuries. The home’s owner, also thought to be the shooter, is said to be cooperating with police. He was not taken into custody.

According to the report, police officers spotted a stolen 2002 Honda Civic in motion and unsuccessfully attempted to pull over the driver at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

"The vehicle was driving alleyways and side streets very recklessly, to the point where officers lost sight of it due to its speed as it accelerated away from them,” according to a police spokesman.

A short time later, the stolen car allegedly blew through an intersection and smashed into another automobile. Officers were called to the accident scene, but the perp had fled on foot into a nearby yard.

The homeowner of that property, who had the warning sign in his house’s window, apparently made good on his promise. Police said the home’s owner was brandishing a handgun and standing watch over the injured would-be thief, who was taken to a hospital to be treated for his wounds.

St. Paul police called the apparent citizen’s arrest “unique” and said they are looking into the specifics of what occurred.

Duty to Retreat: If the defendant isn't in their home, Minnesota's self-defense law requires a "duty to retreat" before using deadly force, but only if retreat is possible and it doesn't put the person into more danger. Deadly force isn't authorized (outside of the home) unless there's a reasonable belief of "great bodily harm."

The homeowner accused of shooting the driver in a stolen car crash has been charged with second-degree assault.

Vincent Trotter, 36, of Cook Avenue in St. Paul, opened fire on the suspect – identified as Jalik Combs – after finding him sat against the side door to his house just after 10 a.m. Tuesday.

This was shortly after a two-car crash on a nearby street involving a stolen vehicle, the occupants of which fled after the crash, with Combs – the driver – among them.

According to the complaint filed against Trotter, security cameras from a nearby house show him pulling into the parking spot by his house while Combs was sat against the door

Police found that Combs had made no attempt to enter Trotter's house, with the camera showing he stood up and walked down the steps of the unenclosed porch as Trotter approached his property. Combs' hands were empty, visible and away from his body.

Combs then proceeded to turn away from Trotter and began to walk north away from him while still looking over his shoulder.

But Trotter, who has a valid conceal and carry permit, then allegedly advanced on Combs and opened fire,.

"It is clear from the video that JC was retreating away from Trotter as Trotter fired his handgun," the complaint says.

Trotter was cooperative with police, and was still holding the gun when police arrived.

After putting the gun on the ground, he said: "I pull up and he’s by my door."

"I told him don’t move, he moves, and I let 3 or 4 rounds go," he said. "I see blood, so I think I hit him. I tried to hit him. I carry a 45.”

The Pioneer Press reports that Combs was treated for gunshot wounds to his buttocks, forearm and legs, and has been booked into jail for suspected auto theft.

Primarily a bunch of blue state left wing wackadoodles, more than willing to support Amy Klobuchar for president (she's just slightly smarter than AOC).
