Default 870 express long slide release

A couple weeks ago I was handling a new 870 express and something felt really weird about it, but I couldn't quite place it. I've been shooting Wingmasters for 25ish years, and my newest one was an early 1990s model my dad bought new.

What I realized was the slide release on the new express sticks out WAY past the trigger guard. On the old Wingmasters you basically have to push the release flush with the trigger guard to cycle the action - on this gun the release stays proud of the trigger guard probably 3/32" when fully depressed.

Is this a new vs old thing, an Express vs Wingmasters thing, or does Remington have an extended slide release that they use on certain models?

Last month I won a new 870 Express at the FOAC Gun Bash so I got it out to look at it. The slide release on mine only sticks out below the trigger guard about 1/8-5/32. When I press it, it goes flush with the trigger guard, and matches the contour of the guard and the slide releases. It doesn't seem excessive to me.

And that's what I'm used to. Based on your post, I did some looking and it looks like there is an extended slide release they put on the 870 tactical models and a couple of the police models.

My 2018 Express and Wingmaster both have a standard slide release that's flush when pressed.
